Master Cleanse Madness

Ever heard of the so called “Master Cleanse” or “Lemonade Diets” that people follow for extreme, rapid weight loss?  They are everywhere and they are extremely dangerous!  You basically drink this  lemonade and cayenne pepper concoction for 10 days straight…. that’s literally all you consume. I was talking to a coworker yesterday about doing these (she did one about a year ago) and after going through this horrific experience, she says “never EVER again.” Well, my first thought is…. as a nurse (which she is) you should know not to do one of these.  She experienced shakiness, weakness, fatigue and irritability.  Needless to say she lost 10 pounds, but gained half of it back almost immediately after returning to normal food. DUH!

In addition to feeling totally worthless for 10 days…… this cleanse lacks in all of the following: carbohydrates, protein, fat, calories, and pretty much every vitamin and mineral.  The only type of “cleanse” that I would recommend is the kind that you take in addition to your normal, healthy diet.  In fact, if you are eating well there is actually no need for said cleanse.  My point here is that people are looking for a quick-fix weight loss program, when really the only proven way to lose weight AND KEEP IT OFF is by eating right and exercise.  Seems pretty simple. But it’s hard. VERY hard.  Leading a healthy lifestyle is a daily struggle. So, I’ve come up with the top 5 things that help keep me and my diet balanced.

Top 5:

  1. Exercise, exercise, exercise.

My bad-A sister and some random dude, CrossFitting!

2. Eat fruits or veggies (or both) at EVERY meal.

3. Portion control

5. Eat only when you are hungry.

Me, chowing down on NYC pizza. Pretty sure I was hungry here ;P

I would suggest incorporating each of these into your current lifestyle, one-by-one.  It’s a slow and long process, but will become second nature once you have figured out what works for you!

Happy Friday everyone! And thanks for reading 🙂

  1. Awesome! Another blog to entertain me while I am at work =) Lol, looking forward to reading on and learning lots from your expertise. Love ya!

  2. Great tips and advise! The thing of it is, if you base your entire efforts on quick fixes for weight loss, you are already setting yourself up for failure. Diets do NOT work. Permanent diet modifications, lifestyle changes (ie. healthy living & EXERCISE), and consistency is what works. And you are most definitely right, it is not easy making positive changes if you are not used to it. But it is even harder if you don’t make these changes later on down the line when it gets harder to lose weight and exercise. And for some of us, myself included, I did not get unhealthy overnight, it was a continuous pattern of poor lifestyle choices. Granted now, after a lot of hard work and determination, I can see the difference time and hard work can make. Believe me when I say it is absolutely worth it. Have faith and a little patience. Remember, it takes at least 21 days to make/break a habit. Make the effort to make it great. Great blog!

  3. Two words – CB! Very informative, to the point and encouraging with the pics and words. I’m hooked and look forward to your next post!

  4. Awesome Blog Bestie! Good Advise! We missed you at the Diva Dash today. We ran in about 30-35 minutes! 🙂

  5. I highly recommend doing the as it is based on relevant and current scientific data on the physiology of detoxification. It involves one week of consuming a healthy diet with a focus on fruits and vegetables, mostly plant protein, healthy fats and fibre. It is known that a diet that supports detoxification is balanced in carbohydrates (60%), protein (30%) and healthy fats (30%). i did this cleanse for 10 days, it was a group og 10 people, we hired a chef to cook the meals. After the 10 days of The Cleanse I continued the eating diet for another 4 months, I felt great, clear, healthy and thin. I need to get back into the mind set to do it again

  6. I think it is important to understand that there are many versions of a “cleanse” diet out there with some being extreme and others simply advocating a healthy diet along with a healthy lifestyle change which is what your wonderful blog is all about! Thanks for your menus, tips and encouraging words.
